Hey fans of ‘North of North’!

To celebrate the announcement of the show’s renewal for season two, CBC has put together a compilation of season one’s funniest moments.

(If you haven’t yet caught the show on CBC Gem or Netflix, now would be a good time. :packetcat_wink: )

Fashion in ‘North of North’ has generated a lot of comment in social media.

I’ve noticed that many of these come with assumptions about what women would be wearing in Inuit communities, and a lack of understanding of the importance of sustainable design in Inuit culture.

CBC has a great feature with interviews with the show’s creators on the point.

‘The show's emphasis on slow fashion ran counter to a film industry that often operates on a quicker schedule.

"Nothing here is mass-made," Aglok MacDonald said. "So it really is going out to independent artists who are just crafting a few things here and there and seeing if they could put in a bulk order."’

The federal elections leaders debate is happening now and I am amazed that APTN is broadcasting a live translated event in Plains Cree.

I speak my James Bay Mushkegowuk Cree dialect fluently and I can understand about 50% of the broadcast and it's beautiful.

It would be like an English speaking person in Canada listening to a heavily inflected English with a Scottish or Irish accent.

North of North has dropped on Netflix today.

It’s an absolute joy of a show that looks misogyny, settler paternalism and intergenerational trauma directly in the eye but still leaves one feeling delighted, cheering on Siaja’s journey as a young ‘modern Inuk woman’ episode by episode.

A CBC-ATPN coproduction with Netflix, it ran weekly on CBC Gem earlier this year in Canada.

It deserves all the viewing minutes globally.

Starting a rewatch is what I needed this week.

I guess I mean in the north, the great central American Empires clearly had the warrior gods and so within my theory must have had the gene (and this is all a problem), but I’m talking about my Cree and Blackfoot folks on #APTN saying Creator, I think I may even have heard it in the context of offerings and thanks for hunts, like Creator, and not the Deer Spirit or whatever?
.
That last episode of Native America, “New Worlds,” or something, talked about how the surviving cultures did all they could to preserve their culture and embed it into the new lives forced on them, and I want to think “Creator,” is an adapted Christian God, including both nature and animism but . . . modern and global.
.
I would rather Creator simply be the Turtle Island name for the Goddess, the original monotheistic deity, but I’m stuck on the word, Creation is the spanking gene talking in my mind, creators are new and fictional.
.
Hmmm. 🤓
