Please take some time watch my deceased friend, Twyla's #documentary. She worked extremely hard with Alexandra Morton to create this film doc. It's about the plight of #BCWildSalmon & why many of us activists here have been fighting to get all open net fish farms out of BC coastal waters. They should have never been allowed to set up operations in the first place.

#APTN: "‘I’m still in shock’: DFO patrol boat rams Mi’kmaw fishing vessel"

#Journalist: Angel Moore

#DFO boarded a Mi'kmaw #fishing boat engaged in fishing in a tribal fishery, despite the skipper warning them off as it was "unsafae". The DFO vessel does considerable damage to the fishing vessel in the process of the boarding.

En route, home.

The #conservation team caught a few invasive crabs during the Gorge Waterway trapping today. The team is back out, tomorrow morning at 10am. This is an ongoing environmental project for our #GorgeWaterwayActionSociety. In association with #DFO - #PacificSalmonFoundation - #PeninsulaStreamsSociety - #InvasiveSpeciesCouncilBC.

Expect some invasive European green crab photos & an educational video short to help folks identify & report them, to be shared, soon!

I'll be at #Esquimalt #GorgeWaterway /Kinsmen park in a few hours to join the invasive green crab monitoring team. It's another trapping/netting day & I'll be documenting some of the project's work.

[ Since 2022, we have participated in the Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ European Green Crab Monitoring Project. European green crabs are a destructive invasive species that removes eelgrass very efficiently, destroying habitat for everything else in the Gorge. Unfortunately, we caught adult European green crabs in the Gorge for the first time in August 2024 through our monitoring program.

We are working with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Peninsula Streams Society to remove as many as possible before the problem worsens. To prevent the spread of European Green Crabs, make sure to clean, drain, and dry off any watercraft according to BC Invasives. ]

A very exciting day with our much delayed 🇨🇦 #DFO research ship 🚢 CCGS Limnos sailing to the Welland Canal for sampling on Lake Erie for the #GreatLakes Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative #CSMI2024 fieldyear. The ship has been in drydock since last June, and we are so happy to have her back. Science moorings will be deployed, and my Fisheries and Oceans #Canada #Science staff & students will be measuring #algae primary productivity, bacterial growth and #zooplankton across #LakeErie.

“When they did that to our Elders, they took away fishing for our generation.”

Ray Williams remembers when Fisheries and Oceans confiscated the Mowachaht boats from Yuquot.

The boats left behind on the beaches of the remote community of Nootka Island were burned.

That act of colonial violence not only left the people without a means to earn a living, it was an assault on their identities, their culture, their way of being.
