Indigenous communities in Latin America are revolutionizing clean energy, replacing diesel generators with solar power in remote villages. This grassroots movement creates jobs, reduces pollution, and empowers local people to control their energy future. It’s a beautiful example of traditional knowledge and modern technology working together.

Human rights abuses by major conservation charity against the #Baka in #Congo-Brazzaville

The charity Survival International, which lobbies for the rights of indigenous people, and raised the issue of the abuse of the Baka people with Prince Harry, criticised African Park's decision not to make the findings of the investigation public.

Survival told the BBC "African Parks has committed to more reports, more staff and more guidelines – but such approaches have not prevented horrific abuses and violations of international human rights law in the decade or more that African Parks has known of these atrocities, and there is no reason to believe they will do so now".

The Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) is not just history — it's the foundation of Malaysia.

✅ Sabah & Sarawak did NOT join Malaysia — they CO-FOUNDED it together with Malaya and Singapore.
✅ MA63 is an international treaty signed by all parties and witnessed by the UK.
✅ It promised special autonomy to Sabah & Sarawak in areas like immigration, education, religion, and resource control.
✅ Full MA63 implementation = a real federation, with equal partners — not central control from KL.
✅ Honoring MA63 is NOT anti-Malaysia. It is how Malaysia was meant to be: fair, united, and just.

We don’t need to fight to divide. We need to speak up to restore.

At a meeting of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), the U.S. counselor for economic and social affairs, Edward Heartney, touted President Donald Trump as a protector of Indigenous women. It didn’t go well. @Toastie reports for @HighCountryNew about this, and some of the other speeches at the annual meeting. Heartney slipped out in the silence immediately after he spoke. Had he waited, he would have heard what sounded like a direct rebuff to his statement, though it was written in advance. “The U.S. has opened the coastal plain to oil and gas leasing, threatening our very survival,” said model and land protector Quannah ChasingHorse on behalf of the Gwich’in Steering Committee. “The Gwich’in have never given consent for development, and our right to self-determination is being violated by interests that view our lands as a commodity,” ChasingHorse continued. “I am outraged that decisions about my people’s future are being made without us at the table.”

#Genome analysis connects Picuris #Pueblo people in northern New Mexico to their #Chacoan ancestors. Could the project bolster tribal land rights and serve as a model for partnership between scientists and #Indigenous communities?

'The Picuris’ oral history, cultural practices, and artifacts strongly link them to Chaco Canyon. Since approximately 900 C.E., they’ve lived some 275 kilometers to the canyon’s east, in the heart of New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo mountains. The Picuris used to be among the largest Pueblos but are now the smallest, and they’re routinely excluded from discussions about policies surrounding Chaco Canyon.'

Today In Labor History May 1, 1946: The three-year Pilbara strike began in Australia. In this strike, indigenous Australian pastoral workers demanded recognition of their human rights. They were also fighting for better wages and working conditions. The bosses often treated indigenous workers like slaves. Many didn’t even pay them in cash. Rather, they paid them in tobacco and food. And if indigenous workers tried to quit or leave, the police forced them back. Sometimes they massacred entire families. The strike was one of the longest in Australian history. And it was a major event in the struggle for indigenous rights.
