#Trump #DHS spox Tricia McLaughlin in a *statement* [propaganda] called the incident "a bizarre political stunt" by a group of #protesters.

The group that included members of #Congress "*stormed* the gate & *broke into* the detention facility" as a busload of detainees entered a security gate, McLaughlin said.

The protesters "holed up in a guard shack, the first security check point," she said.

#Baraka, 55, is a #Democrat running for #governor of #NewJersey. Kabir Moss, a spox for Baraka's campaign, confirmed the #arrest at the facility #DelaneyHall.

At least 3 #House #Democrats from NJ were also at the detention center, acc/to a post from Rep #BonnieWatsonColeman.

…The mayor's admin filed a lawsuit in late March to block the opening of the #Newark #immigrant #detention facility, arguing its operators failed to obtain the proper permits & violated city code.

Mayor #Baraka "committed trespass & ignored multiple warnings" from DHS officials who told him to leave the facility, alleged #AlinaHabba, fmr #Trump defense atty & interim #USattorney for #NewJersey.

"He has willingly chosen to disregard the law. That will not stand in this state. He has been taken into custody," Habba, wrote on X.

"NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW," she added.

With further entry to the library barred, a growing crowd of #demonstrators outside the building moved to the streets just beyond the campus gates.

One #student org representing the #protesters said on social media that school security had assaulted demonstrators & acknowledged that some activists had refused to show their IDs to ofcls.

…Asked if people should be able to criticize him without fear of reprisal, #Trump responded, “Absolutely. Yeah, I do. That I do.”

“It’s a part of #democracy. It is. You’re always going to have #dissent. There’s nothing you’re going to do about that. Am I going to get 100% unified? It would be a strange place. I can’t even imagine it.”

Earlier this afternoon, the Second Circuit denied the #Trump #DOJ's request for an immediate administrative stay of the order granting #MoshenMahdawi's release.

…#EmilBove’s demands frustrated people in the #CivilRights division, but many of the managers were afraid to push back, having watched a month earlier as Bove pressed prosecutors in a different division, the #PublicIntegrity section, to drop #criminal charges against #NYC Mayor #EricAdams…. That section, which once had about 30 lawyers, now has only a handful.

#EmilBove insisted that the #Instagram account in question had been used to make a threat, while line prosecutors said the statement at issue did not meet the #legal definition of a #threat. In late March, the #SocialMedia company suspended the group’s account for failing to meet its “community standards.”

The #CivilRights Prosecutors refused to compile such a list that could be given to #ICE agents….

#EmilBove then shifted his focus to obtaining a search #warrant for the group’s #Instagram account…. He ordered prosecutors to apply for a search warrant for the nonpublic data associated with the account, these people said.

The premise of the application was also contentious within the department.
