From 7pm London time we travel back to late 1920s Japan with @stewf at @letterformarchive as he takes you deeper into the 24 volumes of The Complete Commercial Artist.

The periodical, and the archive's new book (letterformarchive.org/shop/com), were the topic of Stephen's regular BLAG column: Inside Letterform Archive.

Today I've dived back into an earlier rabbit hole to investigate the renowned Gawthorp sign firm that was based in Leeds from around 1889–1916.

If anyone knows anything about them and/or these patent 'panorama' railway arrival and departure indicators, then do let me know.

The advertisment pictured appeared in The Railway Times on 16 September 1905.

Vintage black and white advertisement for "Gawthor's Patent Panorama Railway Arrival & Departure Indicators". Along with some details of the information that can be displayed on them — time, route, destination, etc — there are two cabinets pictures for arrivals and departutes respectively. These look to be about the size of a wardrobe, with some kind of changeable display of text information inside.

Next at BLAG Meet (bl.ag/meet) We'll hear from the Crickx Research Group about their work investigating the life and work of 'typographic letterer' Chrystel Crickx.

I've previously shared the project at bl.ag online (bl.ag/peeling-back-the-layers-), and the Publi Fluor book (surfaces-utiles.org/publi-fluo) was one of those in 'Book Club' in BLAG 06 (bl.ag/06).
