Palatable versus #poisonous: Scientists reveal how #bats learn to identify which prey is safe to eat
phys.org/news/2025-04-palatabl paper: royalsocietypublishing.org/doi

"if they hear a call from an unpalatable #frog, they save time and energy by not responding. But frog calls do not come with automatic spam warnings... the #bat learns to distinguish between palatable and unpalatable #frogs through experience... juveniles can identify larger prey by their calls, but they can't distinguish the #toxic species"

To do a completely different #bloomscrolling from my visit to #Saguaro #NationalPark near #Tucson #Arizona, I present the blooms of the Saguaro #Cactus itself! These are pretty hard to photograph as they are usually found on the tips of the branches, which are usually pretty high off the ground. This is just fine for an important pollinator, the Lesser Long-nosed #Bat. This #endangered species not only pollinates the cactus at night, but it disperses its seeds by air when it later feeds on the cactus fruit. Here’s some more information:

in case you weren’t appreciating bats today, I’ll leave this one here in honor of international bat appreciation day. bats are cooler than we’ll ever be.
Rafinesque's Big-eared Bat (Corynorhinus rafinesquii), she was the first of this species I had ever seen/captured/released for bat surveys back in 2009 and will always hold a special place in my heart.
