In today's crossword, the answer to the clue "bumpy jumper" was "toad". I will be calling toads and frogs bumpy jumpers from now on.

I have an app on my phone called Merlin from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology that does a great job identifying #birds automatically through the phone's microphone in real time.
I wish there was a similar app for frog calls. This spring I've heard three different frog calls. One is unequivocally the Western Chorus Frog. But the other two I'm not as positive. I've recorded the calls and compared to ones I've found online. My best guess is one is the Western Toad & the other the Wood Frog.

When worlds collide: as my followers may know, almost every day, I post a) a picture of a species of frog; b) a Japanese art print; and c) a daily blog post in which I translate a sentence or two from a Japanese book.
In the book, I encountered a most important word: 蛙, pronounced "kaeru" or "kawazu"; in English, "frog."

A few weeks ago I put a small pond in my garden. I was happy to find a frog had made its home there but unfortunately today I just found the frog dead in the water 
Not sure on the cause of death. It's a sad day
