I'm endlessly fascinated by how we use the city as a substrate not just for art, but for communication and raw human expression. When I first started this project I made separate IG accounts for what I saw as different aspects of the project: @ if.these.walls was for stuff like this, @ it.must.be.a.sign was for weird and funny signs, and my main account was for the more traditional urban landscape photography. I've done away with that compartmentalisation here, partly because it was a hassle but more because the parts feel like they want to be a whole.<br>
<br>
Anyway. Expect more landscapes and less graff as I work my way forward through the archives. But for now enjoy Melbourne's sharehouse dramas writ large on laneway walls.<br>

jexa versoI've always had a complex relationship with this photo. Not so much love/hate, but maybe pull/push? The aesthetics appeal, but the situation frustrates. Heaps of high-end building materials just dumped and rotting, most likely intended for "luxury" apartments (ie overpriced dog boxes) that were never built. Or they were tossed because somebody who could afford to change their mind did so after an order was placed. <br>

I can't remember anything about the avatarpolymorph.net of 2015, but when I visited again today I wasn't entirely surprised to discover it was down. With a little more searching I learned that Avatar Polymorph (born Nicholas Playford) was a writer who lived in the Fitzroy area from 1990 until his death five months after I took this photo. One reviewer wrote of his surrealist fiction: "The ontological flux of the everyday is suddenly revealed as overwhelmingly fantastic."<br>
<br>
Together with Steve Proposch, he also wrote one of the most accurate and damning essays on gentrification I've ever read. It's about Fitzroy, but as they note it applies to cities everywhere. Worth reading the whole thing (it's fairly short), but here's the essence from Proposch:<br>

"Thus, no sooner has their creativity brightened and enlightened the joint, and society besides, than the artists who have caused such positive change are forced out by skyrocketing rents and an influx of people who want what those scummy artists have got but have no ability or desire to improve or add to it. Before too long all the people who started the movement are forced to move on, either due to the jacked up rents and property prices, or the loss of peace and quiet prosperity replaced with high demand, demand, demand."<br>

Greetings, fediverse. So good to be here. I was going to import my IG account, but there's something to be said for a fresh start. We're still going back in time, though.
I've been wandering the marginal spaces of Melbourne's inner north (and sometimes a bit farther afield) for more than a decade, photographing the strange and beautiful things that I encounter. I've always felt that these images slide between documentation and speculation, and indeed this entire project began as a creative practice PhD that poked at the curious dualism between magic and real. Why not both?
Moving over to Pixelfed is giving me the chance to dive deep into my archives, discover hidden gems and make new choices about how I offer this playful proposition to the world. I don't expect that I'll stick to a strictly chronological reconstruction of this ongoing project, but for now I'm enjoying the experience of going back to a starting point and moving forward through time. There's an echo of an origin story in this approach – but that's a tale for another time.
