Just watched "The Enemy Below" for the mumbleth time. Robert Mitchum and Kurt Jurgens. Highly recommended. Some good comments on the nature of war that actually work. Ultimately it's an anti-war movie by stealth. Lots of manly men manning about the place doing manly things in manly ways, but still managing to jerk an honest tear towards the end. Available for free on YouTube.

Our second Soviet film this week is THE ASCENT (1977). In the hands of director Larisa Shepitko, this tale of two partisan fighters captured by German soldiers takes on the aspect of a religious parable. #YabtM #reviews #YouTube #worldcinema #foreigncinema #warmovies #Russia #USSR #movies #film #cinema #FilmMastodon #Cinemastodon youtube.com/watch?v=2Zv-AQqG4F

Yelling About Movies goes to the USSR this week with two Soviet-era films set during World War II. Bolstered by spectacular cinematography, THE CRANES ARE FLYING (1957, D. Mikhail Kalatozov) spends limited time on the front lines, focusing instead on the emotional devastation inflicted on those back home. CRANES was the only Soviet film to win the Palm d'Or at Cannes. Here's our discussion.

On first glance you might mistake KING RAT (1965) for a British production. English director Bryan Forbes surrounded topliner George Segal with a cast of British actors playing English and Australian POWs. Released by Columbia pictures and shot in exotic Sherman Oaks (doubling for Singapore)! #YabtM #reviews #YouTube #cinemastodon #movies #film #cinema #ww2 #WWII #warmovies youtube.com/watch?v=KTaM0XdGAj
