In our region the powwows are small compared to the massive event in NM. We don't have enough women to have a separate buckskin competition, much less a Northern and Southern style one. Here's a clip of the women's northern buckskin competition. Look at the movement of the fringe on their regalia.
These women are highly skilled because they all seemed to keep that fringe moving effortlessly. 5/5

People are generally familiar, I think, with powwow dances: men northern and southern traditional, women northern and southern traditional, men grass dance, men fancy dance, women jingle, women shawl, women fancy shawl, women northern and southern traditional, women buckskin and men chicken dance. I caught a good clip of the women's fancy shawl and they were so beautiful. 4/5

The grand entry took 20 minutes! As they approached the end, there were so many dancers that the floor of the coliseum could no longer be seen. This was the first day and the drummers/singers were in competition. They were lined up on the two sides. On the second day the drummers were in the middle and by the time the dancers entered, they could no longer be seen. This photo is from day 1 at the end of entry. 3/5

The powwow took place at the Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque NM. The first photo is at the beginning of the Grand Entry. It opened with a dancer holding the eagle staff. Behind him are the war bonnets, then the outgoing Miss Indian World, and the head man and woman dancers. The coliseum floor is empty at this time. 2/5

Some cleansing for the time lines today. Went to #GatheringOfNations Powwow over the weekend. I've been attending powwows for nearly my entire life and this weekend was unlike anything I've ever experienced. The energy of the dancers and drummer/singers was amazing. And it was so clear this was an event for folks to celebrate each other. Visitors were welcome but it was not about them. Sharing 2 videos and 2 pics below. 1/5

#Arizona #TwoSpirit #Powwow empowers community amid growing #AntiTrans legislation

"The Arizona Two Spirit Powwow returned to #PhoenixArizona on Saturday, February 22, to spotlight Indigenous #LGBTQ+ and two-spirit people for a day of cultural celebration and community.

"Hosted at South Mountain Community College, the event welcomed dancers, drum groups and attendees from across the region. More than just a traditional gathering, the powwow allowed two-spirit individuals to celebrate their identities and honor their place in Indigenous culture.

“'This (powwow) is a perfect example of a #SafeSpace for people to come and dance in whatever category they want to dance in, dress the way that they feel good about themselves, love who they want to love, and they are safe here. This tells the community we are here, we are here for you,' Sheila Lopez said.

"Lopez is the founder of Arizona’s first Two Spirit Powwow and the first Native chapter of #PFLAG, which bills itself as the country’s largest advocacy organization that supports LGBTQ+ individuals and their families.

"President Donald Trump’s recent executive actions have left #transgender and two-spirit communities uncertain about their rights and recognition going forward.

"'It is super important right now with the administration, what they’re doing to pretty much wipe away trans people. It’s super critical right now for us to continue to show up in the community, to say we’re here, we’re not going anywhere and you can’t erase us, period,' Lopez said."

Trail of Tears Intertribal Pow Wow

…on the first full weekend after Labor Day…intertribal Pow Wow at the park…celebrate their rich heritage, to socialize with old friends and make new ones. It is also an opportunity to expose non-indians to centuries old traditions of various dances, Native American crafts, and to educate Pow Wow visitors with story telling and Indian lore demonstrations.

#TwoSpiritPowwow invites natives to dress and dance on their own terms.

"Em Matson leaned intently over a long table to arrange the delicate pieces of water lily appliqué.

"Amid the mechanical whir of sewing machines and the lively chatter during a community regalia making night, Matson zeroed in on the task at hand: finishing their ribbon pants in time for the Two Spirit Powwow.

"On Saturday, New Native Theater will sponsor Minneapolis' second annual 'Reclaiming Our Identities' Two Spirit Powwow, part of a burgeoning movement of powwows across the country that honor Two Spirit and #indigiqueer (Indigenous and queer) people.

"'I can't wait to see everybody turn out. I know that if you come specifically to this powwow, it means you support our community,' said Wase Mannidu Ikwe, a Two Spirit person of the Rocky Boy Chippewa Cree Tribe. 'It's nice to see our allies. As Two Spirits, we make large impacts in the native community. We are valid.'

"'Two Spirit' is an umbrella term derived from the #Anishnaabe '#NiizhManidoowag' (literally translated as "two spirits") that describes native people who exist outside the #GenderBinary and hold sacred roles in their communities.

"Popularized by activists in the 1990s, the term honors multiplicity within native conceptions of gender identity and spirituality. It also reflects a pre-colonial legacy of gender diversity that is being reclaimed today.

"'Prior to European #colonization, #GenderDiversity was the norm for many tribes. Gender was based on your roles and responsibilities, not what you looked like,' said Matson, a Two Spirit of the Sault Ste. Marie Ojibwe and one of the organizers of Minneapolis' Two Spirit Powwow.

"In the months leading up to the powwow, organizers have hosted regalia-making nights for local Two Spirit and indigiqueer folks to make ceremonial clothing that authentically represents their identities.

"'Our goal was for you to come and make whatever makes you feel comfortable,' said organizer Beth Seidl of the White Earth Band of Chippewa. 'We wanted everyone to feel safe, without any chance of someone coming by and saying, 'You're a boy. Why are you making a ribbon skirt?' if that's not how they identify."
