P.S. We had our children late, and so for us the subtle drag of aging combines with the constant rejuvenating joy of helping two new humans find their way.

It was a blessing that my daughters could see me with my old friends, hear me speak in my mother tongue, see me interact in a way that echoes how I acted and spoke as a young man.

Old friends coming over. We know each other since school, decades ago. We last met 7 years ago.

At my stage in life, this means wrinkles and all sorts of rather visible changes to our bodies. Not incapacity, necessarily, but an annoying dominance of wear and tear, all over.

Old friends meet, each absorbs the shock of seeing what is happening to the other, each recognises that their friend has the same experience.

Also: the joy of complete trust when meeting those old friends. Laughing together about subtle references to events 50 years back. The affirmation of having done a few things right in our lives. The easy recognition of past mistakes. All is good now. We have left those grudges and embarrassments behind us.

My braised ox cheek, slow-cooked in the chicken stock that I had made especially for the occasion in the week before: a success. Enjoying simple things together, based on a half century of shared experiences, good and bad.

"My Little Town" is a 1975 song by the #American duo #SimonAndGarfunkel. It was written by #PaulSimon, who produced the track along with #ArtGarfunkel and #PhilRamone. The song was included on the 1975 solo releases from both Simon (#StillCrazyAfterAllTheseYears) and Garfunkel (#Breakaway). It would not appear on any of the duo's albums until the 1997 anthology #boxSet #OldFriends and the 1999 compilation album #TheBestOfSimonAndGarfunkel.

Good morning tooters. Late to 🐘 this morning as I was up at 6.15am & out of the door for an early morning walk by 6.30am which was just about dawn #Exercise. It was still warm & humid after the recent storms & the ground is still damp so I don’t have to water the garden, although I should check if anything needs harvesting. Back home just before 8am for my breakfast 🍳 ☕️.
It’s about 23c right now & bright & sunny outside, heading to a warm 34c which means I will need to close the blinds etc probably mid afternoon when the lowering sun belts in the back area & through my sliding glass door & window - where it gets very hot #Weather #AussieSummer.
I’m meeting a friend for lunch today, we’ve been trying to do this since before Christmas but one thing or another gets in the way. I’m really looking forward to it #OldFriends.
Wishing everyone a fabulous #Wednesday whatever you get up to. Hope it’s not too hot, nor too wet wherever you are - have a good one! #HumpDay.

A lyric–you know it–came to me as I walked along the trail this morning.

“Winter companions–lost in their overcoats waiting for the sunrise…
the sounds of the city sifting through the trees settle like dust on the shoulders of the old friends…
Can you imagine us years from today…
Sharing a park bench quietly?
How terribly strange to be seventy[ish].”

I’ve become pleasantly accustomed to all our old friends.
