I saw the A Minecraft Movie this week.

It's better than it needed to be in order to make all the money in the world. But would I say it's a good movie? No, but it's decent.

It does that weird thing that I have seen several times now where it overexplains the premise and world in the first ten minutes and robs itself of a surprise reveal, a heel turn or a simple twist. And those ten minutes feel artificially inserted too. I can almost feel a version of the script where all the elements present in that beginning part are organicall woven into the plot.

If I had to speculate, the reason for this is to 1. get non minecraft initiated up to snuff and 2. show Jack Black early. Because else he'd be not present for the first half hour.
