Cyber Sigils: The Memetic Language of Digital Magick

At this point, I honestly believe we can treat memes and meme culture as sigils. They’re essentially logograms that are practically the same as sigils. Memes rely heavily on shared cultural knowledge and context, which allows them to function effectively as a form of communication, much like logograms do in written language. Similarly, memes can encapsulate ideas, emotions, or intentions in a visual format. For instance, if someone were to create a meme with a specific message or intention in mind, they could use it as a focal point for their energy and intention, much like a sigil.

Building on this idea, the shared cultural context of memes can also amplify their impact, as they often resonate with a wider audience. This resonance is akin to the connotation found in group workings, where memes can be utilized to politically organize and mobilize. Furthermore, initiation rituals often involve symbols that represent deeper meanings, values, or beliefs within a culture. These symbols can encode complex ideas that may not be easily articulated. For example, a rite of passage may use specific objects, colors, or actions that signify transformation, maturity, or belonging.

In this way, just as initiation rituals encode and transmit tacit knowledge, memes can serve as modern vessels for this type of understanding. They often encapsulate shared experiences, cultural references, and social commentary that resonate with specific communities. By doing so, memes convey complex ideas and emotions in a way that is accessible and relatable, allowing individuals to grasp cultural nuances without explicit explanation.

Thus, we can see an intersection and convergence between esoteric and occult initiations and how memes are used in Internet culture, particularly when examining cohort-specific memes. The fascinating aspect of this phenomenon is that this form of sigil magic is endemic to American media. Moreover, America is currently inundated with chaotic and random occult cultural influences. It’s almost as if America has become that evil magical place filled with cannibalistic leopard cultists that eat faces, reminiscent of horror movies. Fortunately, I have a cognitohazard warning system in my subconscious that flags most memes, which is why I have an aversion to them.

In theory, I could use memes as a type of logogram to integrate tacit knowledge. The thing about magic is that it is intentional and tacit. Knowledge of how to do magic is experiential, intuitive, and generally ineffable. Memes and initiations are a hack around this. However, the downsides are too great. Most occultists’ minds have been taken over by memes. Memetic entities function as viral entities.

The imperative and procedural knowledge found in grimoires does not encode what it seems like to do magic; rather, it encodes algorithms and magical codes, essentially. Magic is real, and it is not real at the same time. An illusion is something that is not as it appears; however, deliberately accessing magic is rooted in the apprehension of what it seems like—the qualia of the experience, which, on its own, is illusory. In this way, magic brings the illusory and the unreal into a tangible reality. It’s easier to communicate tacit knowledge among a cohort that has similar experiences because the references are understood tacitly. That is why initiations are important in many esoteric cultures. The pathological entities hanging around the shadows of the culture are not worth it, so I stay away from the tacit knowledge of most occult cultures.

I took a look at some of the occult accounts still on Twitter via Nitter. I saw this:

The total secularization of sex has been so bad for us culturally, reducing it down to brain chemistry and biology. There’s so much more to it that does happen to be incredibly spiritual/religious.

People involved in occulture cross-post between Twitter and BlueSky. They avoid the Fediverse, so anyone hoping they can run to BlueSky is kidding themselves. The people on BlueSky are active on both platforms, cross-post to both, and share screenshots across both.

That person from the screen shot is a white, gay occultist who, ironically, was one of the white men trying to get other white men involved in white dudes for Harris. He voted for Kamala Harris, mind you. So, that man is a Democrat who is gay and voted for Harris early. Words cannot describe how horrified I am at how quickly the gay occultists from my cohort became black-pilled.

I’ve been around occult circles for over 20 years, and it is horrifying how, within the last 8 years, the bulk of the millennials who practiced body energy arts, Theosophical traditions, and various forms of energy work have morphed into black and red pills. It’s really sad. I don’t think it started online. Around 2015 and 2016, many people involved in energy-working communities started attending in-person occult classes, joining in-person occult orders, and going to various lodge meetings. I think the poison started in physical temples.

My entire outlook on things changed after my first undergraduate degree in Biology, and I work in science. My following degrees in Mathematics and Metaphysics also changed my perspective and made me a lot more skeptical. Magic is more of an art than a science to me, so it has always been easy for me to replace one ontological framework with another.

What magicians need to understand is that the modern definition of magic is changing reality in accordance with will. Willpower, which is resistance to desires that conflict with your long-term interests, can be depleted—that is called ego depletion. Compulsive social media usage weakens and depletes your willpower, which means you have none left for magic.

There is this misconception that masturbation drains you of energy. No, obsessions drain you of willpower, so if you replace one compulsion and obsession with another, the outcome is the same. The demonic spirits are manifestations of your own mind, so controlling those demons means controlling those aspects of your mind that they represent. They will merely shift from parasocial relationships with adult content creators to parasocial relationships with bull shit manosphere gurus.

You see applications of this whenever a person creates a servitor. When a magician creates a servitor, what they are actually doing is binding a symbol to an aspect of their mind where their own mind shapes itself into the representation of that thing and references itself. The servitor is you. The demon is you. It is you wearing a mask.

Since most people do not bother to disprove whether or not an egregore represents influence from a field of consciousness, i.e., telepathic influence, Occam’s Razor implies that instead of it being an external, psychic, telepathic influence, it is their mind instantiating an entity from a narrative; ergo, egregores are probably instances of your mind. It’s not an external force. It’s you.

Porn isn’t the issue; rather, more than likely, existential dread is, so the demonic spirit associated with porn is a manifestation of that person’s own dread. Furthermore, the two do not go hand in hand. Reliably practicing magic requires mindfulness. This is not some spiritual perspective; magic is predicated on intentionality.

The tacit knowledge of how to think about something is rooted in the ability to recognize differences in experiential states. Social media creates a dissociative state that disconnects you from your own experience and depletes your willpower. Magic and social media cancel each other out. Since willpower is the ability to control and direct one’s thoughts, emotions, and actions, you can’t even use it in a New Age, Theosophical, or energy-working paradigm to form the intention to direct energy in your body or outside of it.

Spiritual development is correlated with prosocial behaviors, an increase in discipline, and an increase in control. If the cultural beliefs you are involved in are antisocial and rooted in addiction and compulsion, it’s not spiritual. They’re not spiritual; they’re just a cult. Ironically, for me, science gives me the framework to understand how antisocial behaviors harm society, and so for someone with ASPD, like myself, science provides a spiritual perspective on this.

Like I said, words cannot describe how horrified I am at how quickly my cohort of millennials involved in occultism developed into black and red pills. It’s fucking scary. The folks on the High Strangeness, New Age, psionics, and energy-working side of things I knew from high school paranormal forums are on Reddit, completely brainwashed by this red pill stuff.

After my biology degree, I realized that vitalism had been disproven by organic chemistry since I moved into a pragmatic approach. Furthermore, thank God that in my late teens and early 20s I looked into chaos magick, semiotics, and memetics from a psychological perspective because it gave me the tools to prevent my brain from being hacked. Thank God I got into a scientific field because who knows what the fuck would have happened.

Many of the queer occultists on Twitter keep trying to frame it as if they are provocateurs, but they actually believe in this insane shit. They are filled with such self-hatred. All I can do is shake my head at what happened to online occult social networks.

You cannot learn magic on the Internet because the culture of social networks on the publicly accessible Internet is a sphere of obsession and addiction, which negates magical will. I wrote more about that on my main blog here:
