#BILL21 This Québec law bans people who wish to work as teachers, lawyers, police officers, and more, from wearing religious symbols such as crosses, hijabs, turbans and yarmulkes. This not only affects people currently working in the public sector, but also the youth who aspire to those careers. It violates human rights and harms people who are already marginalized. #ForShame

I have a feeling the #CAQ is going to regret how transparent they were in drafting #Bill21 to specifically target Muslim women who covered their heads by this afternoon.

The previous court ruling in a separate, unrelated litigation determined that the law was unambiguously and specifically targeted against Muslim women.

That last word is what matters.

Gender discrimination in application of the #Charter cannot be shielded by a notwithstanding clause.

The #Legault gov intends 2 renew use of controversial #NotwithstandingClause 2 override #FundamentalRights & shield its #StateSecularism law, #Bill21, from court challenges
Bill 21 was adopted in June 2019. The gov invoked the clause, valid for 5 yrs, in order 2 override fundamental rights & impose ban on persons in positions o authority like judges, police officers & teachers from wearng #ReligiousSymbols such as a #hijab, #crucifix, #turban or #kippah while on the job
