Centrists defending Elon's sieg heil saying that it's just a simmilar gesture and not an actual nazi salute reminds me of when mortals see Death in Terry Pratchet's disc world and simply refuse to conceptualize Death as, well, Death. They just see a normal person, refusing/unable to digest reality.
