I shot this in #StowOnTheWold and there's a pretty cool story surrounding it.

This old church has two trees framing the door which have now grown to be a part of the structure. It's said that #Tolkien, who lived nearby, would visit this village and used these doors as inspiration for Durin's Door. The secret door in to #Moria from #LordOfTheRings ... "Speak friend, and enter"

Inspired a bit by @rob_haines's screenshot albums, I've started recording my experiments designing little Dwarf settlements in Return to Moria, a game I've played *far* too much of recently (digging a lot of virtual holes feels like one of my less bad options for coping with the world...)

I've been making some quite pretty places! I've got the first post up, and there'll be more to come in a variety of dwarfish styles and biomes :)

HarperCollins UK have a 40% sale on everything, running until Friday 18th April 2025. Use code SPRING40 at checkout to get the discount. May be a good time to snap up any Tolkien books you're after, especially deluxe editions! I may just have ordered the facsimile Hobbit, hardback expanded Letters and hardback illustrated Robert Foster guide. HarperCollins UK often do flash 50% sales but these are very short running. This one is on for longer. harpercollins.co.uk #Books #Bookstodon #Tolkien

Quenya is the native language of all the High-Elves living in Eldamar and Tol Eressëa. It developed there. The Elves who speak it are the Vanyar (First Clan), the Ñoldor (Second Clan), and the Teleri (Third Clan). But the Teleri's view of their language is that it is a distinct tongue, not a ‘dialect’ of Quenya . The Teleri call their tongue Lindárin, Linda-lambe. In Quenya that tongue is called Telerin, and in English Telerian.

In 1951, #Tolkien rewrites his first Middle-Earth story from 1917 for the fourth and final time. He struggles to make sense of Tuor's aimless hiking.

In this version, first published in Unfinished Tales (1980) we see Tolkien at the height of his LotR powers, treating his early meandering tale as a dependable but badly incomplete historical source. He adds a lot of needed motivation. But keeps his old hero still hiking around!

Tolkien's manuscript.

This is from another area of Tolkien's mind: calendars.
He was pretty obsessed with making calendars for his Middle-earth. He wrote a big appendix to "The Lord of the Rings" about it, and wrote a great deal about the calendars before settling on the text as printed in Appendix D of "The Lord of the Rings".

I also feel like making a Font of Tolkien's own pen writing. What do you think?

The One Ring inscription (Part 2)

Image 1 shows the second One Ring inscription Tolkien sent to the printer. But he was still unhappy with it. So he asked to send another one.
Image 2 shows the well know inscription as printed in books. The original art sent by Tolkien to the printer is lost.

The inadvertently changed tengwa is circled in blue. Tolkien became later aware of his mistake (before publication) but accepted it.

The One Ring inscription (Part 1)

The inscription on the One Ring is perhaps the best-known piece of Tengwar art (along with the Doors of Moria) that Tolkien conceived, but did you know that he made a mistake in trying to find a better style of calligraphy for it after sending it to the printer and being urged by everyone to finish the job?

_look for part 2_
