Today, I was able to test the audio-to-midi service that Music Blocks contributors made last summer together with my students. Here's what they made:
* "Music Blocks Band" by four of my students (group project): musicblocks.sugarlabs.org/inde
* "Sigma Boy" by Wesley: musicblocks.sugarlabs.org/inde

(Just like this post whether or not you understand it. The kids did great!)

They also made a video that I hope to share later.

Give your classroom a creative kickstart with our new warm-up series: Watch and Write!

What you get: a super-short film plus a prompt for writing or discussion. The films are as short as one minute. The themes span the curriculum. (Yes, STEM teachers, there are short films for your classes, too!)

This is a great way to get students engaged and focused. It's also a fun creativity booster for writing groups or individual writers.

I know I'm getting old, or dare I hope to say, wise, because I can't shake the feeling that any and all demonstrable #productivity gains generated by the use of #AI could be outweighed by simply #teaching people to use and manipulate structured plain text efficiently.

Likewise, teaching new #engineers to do those basic things well instead of jumping straight to "this is how you install the latest framework".

#chemistry people:

We're working on pH and acid base equilibria in one of my classes. If I had them do a lab where they prepare two solutions - acetic + ammonium hydroxide - at known concentrations, measure pH, and then calculate Ka/Kb, are there other extensions that would make it more rigorous?

We have not done buffers or weak titrations yet - I'm slowly working my way there.

Hey #history and #maritime and #shipping expert people:

Here's a dataset about #whaling with some variables I don't understand (neither do the students using it for an intro #statistics project). If you have any insight into what these variables/terms mean, will you share that?

  • Number of whales struck (does this mean "harpooned," maybe?)
  • Number of whales tried out (no idea)

The data are here:

File formats as Emoji: 0xffae

by @beet_keeper

File Formats As Emoji (0xFFAE or 0xffae) might be my most random file format hack yet. Indeed, it is a random page generator! But it generates random pages of file formats represented as Emoji.

The idea came in 2016 with radare releasing a new version that supported an emoji hexdump. I wondered whether I could do something fun combining file formats and the radare output to create a web-page.

Along came a spare moment one weekend, some pyscript, and bit of sqlite, et voilà. File Formats as Emoji (0xFFAE) was made a reality.
