MountainWitch ⛤:flag_bisexual:
I think the best garden purchase we made last year was this soil blocker. They are kind of expensive but since it is stainless steel, one and done. It eliminates using the thin individual little plastic things that break down and die in a couple of years then end up in the garden soil and in the landfill. I got these heavy duty trays to put them in, so they can be bottom watered. They should last a good many years. After the trays are done, by then we should have the wood shop built and I can make wooden trays to hold the soil blocks. These are the cabbages I have started in the greenhouse. It will be so easy to just pop them into the garden when they are big enough. I'm impressed by how well the blocks stand up to being sprinkle watered from the top. I used a bale of Pro Mix BX general purpose growing medium for the soil. It holds shape really well. Eventually, I will have to use homemade compost mix but for now this works great.

#gardening #homesteading #tools

daieno bika
Yesterday was a good day for cutting willow stakes and stabbing them back into the ground. So I spent four and a half hours doing so, and accomplished this!

It’s maybe 20 feet of #fedge that will eventually become an actual hedge to fence in the horses.

For now it needs protection in the form of an electric fence to keep them from chewing off all the growing parts before it gets established. It will take me multiple seasons to extend it all the way to where I need it to go.

Why do this instead of building more board fencing, you ask? (No one asked. I’m going to tell you anyway.) Well, the land our rural co-op exists on is very hilly, which means some parts are high and dry - great for putting posts in the ground and having them last for decades - and some parts are low and soggy - terrible for putting fence posts in because they will rot. Also, board fencing can be pricey, even if we’re doing all the work to install it ourselves.

But we still need fencing in those areas to keep the ponies contained. I don’t like using electric fencing for perimeter fencing. I want a real physical barrier that won’t suddenly stop working when it’s icy, snowy, the charger isn’t working, etc etc. I also don’t super like having the horses get shocked. Which does happen to poor Henry sometimes, because he can’t see very well and doesn’t always register that the fence is there before he walks into it, and then he gets a nasty surprise. There are things I can do to mitigate each of these problems, but… long term, I want to reduce the use of the zappy fence as much as possible.

Luckily, willow will grow into a nice coppiced thicket with a bit of encouragement, and we have lots of it growing here! I can cut whips from right nearby and use them to build living fencing that will benefit more creatures of our landscape than just the horses, and it doesn’t even damage the areas I harvest from because they’ll sprout right back up with even more stems. I think this is so cool. I can hardly wait to see it sprouting once the weather warms up a bit more!

I’m also looking forward to getting my hands on Paul Lamb’s new book, Of Thorn & Briar, about the craft of hedge laying in the UK. This willow weaving thing I’m doing isn’t quite that, but it’s not entirely dissimilar, either.

#hedge #OfThornAndBriar #HedgeLaying #LivingFence #willow #coppice #homesteading #sustainability #PastureManagement #LivingWithTheLand #FenceWeaving #grow

MountainWitch ⛤:flag_bisexual:
I can't stress enough how awesome it is to have a root cellar. Mine is very tiny, down in the 4 ft. pit where a decommissioned pond was and another 4 ft high. I used the pond liner as roofing membrane and piled soil on top. The natural grass has grown on it, and sometimes I plant pumpkins on it. Interior is about 6 x 8 and wall to wall shelves. It has never gone below 2 C even when it was minus 26 that one time. I pulled these carrots and potatoes out today. The carrots were getting a little sprouty but still hard and sweet. There are also beets in there that are still as perfect as when I pulled them out of the garden. It's the ultimate shelve stable fresh food.

#homesteading #rootcellar #preserveharvest

MountainWitch ⛤:flag_bisexual:
People ask why I bother to do all the work of growing peas in my garden. Sure, I could buy a bag of Green Giant peas in the grocery freezer section. They were grown on huge tracks of artificially weeded and fertilized agricultural land. Or I can buy a small bulk bag of organic pea seeds, scrounge up a few poles and leftover fencing, put them into the cool ground. In July, I wander into the garden with my coffee early in the morning, picking a pod off the vines to eat, testing the ripeness. Then later, I shell them while sitting on the veranda in the afternoon heat, sipping something cold, and in the evening blanching and freezing the precious green veggie to add to made-from-scratch meals the following winter. LokeMani
The first taste of spring. Sorrel, ground elder, dandelion, and chives made it into today's breakfast sandwich. 🥪

Keeping our property rather wild and unruly has many benefits for the overall balance and biodiversity. And an additional perk is the forage growing all over the place. 🌿 The first leaves are now peaking up through the dead grass left behind from last autumn.

Tip: Consider not cleaning up the garden in autumn. Leaving dead plants to break down over winter is less work and acts as a thick mulch. This mulch provides nutrients to the soil, makes it harder for new weeds to establish themselves, and protects everything hiding underneath from frost. It also allows insects and animals to forage for leftovers.

If the remaining material gets in the way in spring, it can always be cleaned up at that point, when most of its winter benefits have already been enjoyed by plants and animals alike.

#foraging #foragedfood #food #sandwich #homesteading #gardening #gardeningtips

LokeMani
One of the real treasures at home. A collection of jams made by me, my mom, and my grandma.

When I go to pick a new jar from the shelf, I am always reminded that there is tradition here. I wasn't particularly interested as a teenager, but eventually the gardening and jam making bug caught me too. It was inevitable 😛

Fun fact. There are different types of pectin with different structures. High methoxyl (HM) pectin requires a lot of sugar and a high temperature and will set quickly. Low methoxyl (LM) pectin needs calcium and works at a lower temperature and is slower to set.

Where I live, HM is absolutely dominant but the amount of sugar needed to make a thick jam is staggering and makes the end product less enjoyable in my personal opinion. It works fine for blueberries which have a level of astringency, but with strawberry it turns by far too sweet (or too runny if you use less).

This is why I bunker up on LM (with added calcium for a reliable result) when I'm traveling. With it, I can make much thicker and fruitier, well balanced jams 🍓🍒

Also, some fruits and berries have so much pectin on their own that there is no need to add any. For example apples and lingonberries. These can be combined with other fruits to thicken a jam with less or no added pectin 🍏

#jam #homemadejam #cooking #pectin #cookingtips #homesteading

MountainWitch ⛤:flag_bisexual:
Live frugally and resourcefully. Here are a few tips:
-replace zippers in coats, it’s easy, take your time, save a ton of money. Even if you have to hire someone to do it, it is way cheaper than buying a new coat.

-don’t buy packaged or over-packaged food, learn how to cook, bake bread, make things from scratch

-educate yourself on quality, buy beat up used furniture and refinish, you can end up with a great piece of furniture with only a little bit of work for next to nothing

-repair your computers and devices or find someone local to do it.

-if you MUST replace appliances, buy basic hardworking non-computerized, metal component items either new or used. In future, you will be able to repair yourself and chances are they will last much longer. Unless you are a tech pro, you won’t be able to fix computerized parts in appliances. I replaced a computerized sewing machine that cost as much as a used car when IT was used with a basic non-computer new one. It will last until I’m long dead and cost a fraction of the price.

-find better ways of doing things such as using a metal or wooden soil blockers for starting seedlings in stead of plastic sectioned trays that only last a season or 2 then end up in the landfill.

-in the ethnic sections of grocery stores you can buy bulk packages of single spices and herbs way cheaper than little bottles to make your own blends such as curry powder, taco seasoning, meat rubs, etc. Use mason jars to store everything in. If you have a bulk barn nearby you can even reuse your own bags to buy in.

-put your leftover meals in the freezer in portions right after dinner. You avoid forgetting to use them and having to throw out food. End of the week, you have healthy ready-made food and spreading out the meals so that you don't have to eat the same thing multiple days in a row.

-you can get a lot more wear out of old runners by only replacing the insole

-I just rebuilt my home first aid station. I have quality bought kits for the vehicles but for at home, the ready-made kits have lots of unnecessary fillers. I bought various sized gauze pads, tape, rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide, cotton balls, bactine spray, polysporin, big packs of bandaids, etc. as these are the things we use at home. I keep ice packs in the freezer and a heat pad for muscle stuff. Consider the usual type of injuries with regards to your lifestyle and stock accordingly.

-learn how to replace handles on axes, shovels, garden tools etc. And when buying these tools, make sure they have replaceable handles as some new plastic or hastily welded ones are not replaceable.

-I NEVER throw out a scrap of wood, ever.
