Ale glasses

Due to the interminable wars with the French, drinking French wine was seen as unpatriotic in the Georgian period, so better-off Brits drank strong ale instead. At around 10% ABV, this was drunk from conical ale glasses, capacity about 4 ounces.
The glass shown below dates from about 1790-1800. At 6 inches tall, it is a 'short ale', meaning it has a shorter stem than a true ale glass but a longer one than a 'dwarf ale'.

I have a weakness for cool glassware, especially vintage pieces. I picked up this Anchor Hocking martini glass from a consignment auction this week. It turns out to be a 1938-1943 pattern called Manhattan Pink, just right for a chilled Madras on a muggy Friday evening.

My information on this is decades out of date, but the general principles hold. This is expensive.

And for "a couple of the old boys" wholesale levels of supply might be overkill to get a good price. Even at wholesale glass rates (add V.A.T., remember) you are looking at between 3 and 6 times the price that your publican gets xyr normal pint glasses at, but you'll only get them in things like boxes of 24, which is 12 glasses per "old boy".
