You know how much I love new indie NES & FAMICOM games (homebrew/doujin)😍

Among them, I really love RIKI’s games, like Astro Ninja Man DX, for example. The game itself is excellent, even though, of course, a big part of its appeal is the soundtrack. And he even creates guidebooks packed with artwork, music, roms and development anecdotes! 🥰

What about you, do you enjoy soundtracks and guidebooks too? Do you collect them?

Виграв в одному розіграші на підтримку ЗСУ консоль Nintendo Famicom, а саме версію HVC-CPU-GPM-02, що випускалась впродовж 1988-1993 років. В комплекті не було блока живлення, і вже тільки це мені натякнуло, що треба вперше за весь час погодитись та забрати виграш.

Коли консоль прийшла, то виявилось, що їй потрібен ВЧ коаксіальний кабель. Купити новий майже неможливо, але й не треба, бо окремо шмат кабелю у мене вдома був, тож довелось докупити ще RCA та антенний штекер під F-роз'єм. Щодо блоку живлення, то валявся у мене без діла підвищуючий перетворювач на 9В, тому будь-який USB порт тепер можна використовувати як джерело живлення.

Але, звісно ж, консоль не запрацювала. Ще на етапі підключення живлення я помітив, що на роз'єму центральний контакт це не плюс, як у нас всюди зараз заведено, а мінус. Можливо, попередній власник цього не знав, підключив блок живлення від чогось іншого, і в результаті всередині згорів запобіжник. Запобіжника (pico fuse 1,5A) такого у мене не було, тому просто підпаяв одну жилу і... консоль запрацювала. Я очікував, що разом з запобіжником доведеться міняти ще й стабілізатор напруги LM7805, але він вижив.

Далі, як можна здогадатися з прикріпленої картинки, зображення у консолі виявилось не зовсім ідеальне. Спочатку, я подумав, що настав час замінити конденсатори (а їх треба замінити в будь-якому випадку, майже 40 рочків консолі), проте це проблему не вирішило, і поглиблений пошук показав, що це доволі відома проблема для PAL-консолей.

Оскільки планів модифікувати цю консоль у мене нема (AV mod міг би виправити згадану вище проблему), то можливо колись, після війни, доведеться докупити кінескопний телевізор, зібрати самому зовнішній мод на 4 джойстики, та покликати друзів на турнір в Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu...

Хай там як, але було цікаво розбиратись в усій цій купі проблем, дізнатися про jailbars, hanover bars, і зайвий раз згадати про PAL/SECAM/NTSC та інші відеосистеми кодування кольорів... Така собі вийшла більше ніж іграшка, бо нова за потреби обійшлась би мені значно дешевше, але так вийшло цікавіше, бо тепер у консолі є своя історія, яка в першу чергу нагадує про закриття деяких потреб військовим, і саме тому вона тепер безцінна.

Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse

The Castlevania series is noteworthy for its baroque-infused tunes. The third major entry in the series for the Famicom went a step further by making use of the VRC6 soundchip, right into the game cartridge. This allowed for deeper saw bass and complex harmonies thanks to the extra audio channels. Unfortunately, this is only true of the Japanese version — the NES counterpart had to be cut down significantly, but still retains some charm thanks to the strong original compositions shining through, as well as some clever adaptation tricks and choices.

Comparisons between the two versions would be worthy of an entire blog post, but for the sake of this selection, I’ll only feature the original Famicom soundtrack here.

By the way, this is not the only time you’ll hear about Castlevania in this thread…

I have a bit of a #famicom collection. I don't chase the pristine cartridges and pay a fortune, I'm opportunistic and grab the cheaper 'well-loved' carts. Most of them are damaged in some way and have grime that can't be easily removed without risking cracking the shells. You can see that here on the side seams and how the label is peeling away at the top.

I'm planning a little web/video project to share my love of 'medium-condition game cartridges' and have been taking some test shots.
