We like the ability to leave and buy from others. So I am not surprised it didn't take off in China, where ebook readers have a more unwalled garden approach, and you can customize it as much as you can.Recently I broke my Boox Leaf 2 🥲. I was very tempted to buy a Kobo because it was so well built and we'll designed, but I settled with a Boox Go 6 instead because I want the freedom to access multiple stores. It's definitely not as pretty but is 40% cheaper than the Kobo Libra. So my Go reader now has a library eith DRM free ebooks, Amazon and Google Books. I also have Pleco, which enables me to read Chinese ebooks with ease. Till WestermayerKurz: Der langsame Abschied von den US-PlattformenWährend die vergangenen Kontoauszüge von Bestellungen bei Amazon (vieles E‑Books, aber auch anderes, von Klamotten und Spielen bis hin zu Haushaltsgeräten) nur so wimmelten, finden sich im März nur noch zwei Amazon-Buchungen – noch nutze ich Amazon Prime und einen Videokanal*. Dass das so ist, war eine halbbewusste Entscheidung; ein Unterbrechen der eingeübten Praktiken beim Online-Bestellen, in zweierlei Hinsicht: einmal, darüber nachzudenken, ob ich Was-Auch-Immer wirklich haben will, und einmal, um es dann eben nicht bei Amazon zu bestellen, sondern zu gucken, ob das Ding auch anderswo im Netz zu finden ist. Und meistens ist das so.Schwer fällt mir dieser Abschied von „der“ Online-Handelsplattform vor allem in einem Punkt: bei digitalen Büchern. Hier habe ich noch keinen guten Workflow gefunden, um englischsprachige Werke anderswo zu bestellen und zu lesen. Ein Versuch, ein SF-Buch über Google Books zu kaufen, endete damit, dass sich das gekaufte Buch weder auf dem PC noch auf einem der Mobilgeräte öffnen lässt, weil irgendwelche Kopierschutzregeln es verhindern. Und eigentlich würde ich gerne die beiden Kindle-Lesegeräte, die hier rumschwirren, weiter nutzen. Vorerst behelfe ich mir, erst einmal keine neuen Bücher zu kaufen (es gibt noch sehr viel ungelesene in diversen Stapeln), bzw. im Zweifel auf auch über andere Plattformen erhältliche gedruckte Fassungen auszuweichen. Auf die Dauer ist das aber keine Lösung. Wenn also jemand einen erprobten Weg kennt, digitale Bücher ohne Amazon zu erwerben und zu lesen, nehme ich hinweise gerne entgegen (und ja, theoretisch ließe sich Calibre als Client-Server-System aufsetzen, das mir momentan aber noch zu kompliziert …). Deutlich schwieriger als der Abschied von Amazon sieht es bei den anderen Plattformen aus. Na gut, Twitter/X hat mich rausgeworfen, seitdem habe ich keinerlei Lust verspürt, dahin noch einmal zurückzukehren. Bei Meta nutze ich Facebook (und Instagram für den grünen Ortsverband, und Whatsapp für ein paar wenige Kontakte). Microsoft wird mit Windows 11 und Copilot, mit Abo-Modellen für MS Office etc. zunehmend unattraktiv, noch läuft auf einem meiner beiden privaten Rechner aber Windows, und auf dem Dienstlaptop eh – da habe ich aber keinen Einfluss drauf. Dito das Diensthandy, das das ganze Apple-Ökosystem hinter sich herzieht. Ganz schwierig sieht’s bei Paypal und bei Google aus, da sehe ich noch keine wirklich gute Alternative für die Art, wie ich deren Produkte aktuell nutze. Maine State Library issues layoffs, cites inability to access federal funding The Maine State Library announced Wednesday 13 staff members, whose positions are supported by federal funding, were laid off.April 9, 2025 "The Maine State Library announced layoffs on Wednesday, citing an ongoing inability to access federal funding. "The announcement comes after President Donald <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Trump" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Trump</a> signed an executive order in March deeming the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) 'unnecessary' and slated to be dismantled, later placing the entire agency's staff on administrative leave. "The Maine State Library said in a news release that IMLS funding represents 30 percent of its annual budget and has not received any communication from IMLS on if or when funding might be restored. "The state library said it last received funds from its 2025 federal award advance through the IMLS on March 24. "Thirteen employees whose positions are supported by federal funding have been laid off, the state library said. Those employees represent approximately 30 percent of Maine State Library staff. "The Maine State Library said the layoffs could be rescinded if funding is restored. "Starting on Thursday, the Maine State Library will close for a two-week reorganization period where its location at 242 State St. in Augusta will not be open to the public.
