Bateman<p>Mahler (Ken Russell, 1974) Interesting attempt at the biopic with the usual surrealistic, arty and uncanny flare one can expect from Russell. The first half is great and unpredictable yet somehow it slowly becomes more of a standard biographical film ticking off the important moments in the life of the composer. Looks and sounds sumptuous. <a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/CinemaMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CinemaMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/film" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>film</span></a> <a href="https://boxd.it/93nGTd" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">boxd.it/93nGTd</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Bateman<p>AGGRO DR1FT (Harmony Korine, 2023) Korine ups his game with a colourful and adventurous mashup of cinema, hip-hop and game esthetics. The sound and the music really carry the film. Quite special, although I'm not sure if it's a new beginning for cinema or the end station of culture during multinational capitalism.<br><a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/CinemaMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CinemaMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/film" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>film</span></a> <a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/avantgarde" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>avantgarde</span></a><br><a href="https://boxd.it/8YPlep" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">boxd.it/8YPlep</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Mandu 🥟<p>Companion (2025) </p><p>An edgy thriller that blends sci-fi, horror, and satire. The film also explores themes of consent and toxic relationships, incorporating elements of suspense, dark humor, and moments of violence to deliver a thought-provoking narrative.<br>Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑 </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/CinemaMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CinemaMastodon</span></a></p>
Bateman<p>Paris nous appartient (Jacques Rivette, 1961). I love Rivette's films, his singular storytelling style, and his modest dream logic. His style is already locked in his debut film, which is beautifully shot. Is there a secret to be uncovered, or is everybody playing a game? The paranoic dilemma is slowly unravelled. <br><a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/CinemaMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CinemaMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/film" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>film</span></a> <a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/paris" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>paris</span></a><br><a href="https://boxd.it/8UufHH" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">boxd.it/8UufHH</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Bateman<p>晩春 | Late Spring (Yasujirō Ozu, 1949) A beautiful, calm and in the end melancholic film about an interesting father-daughter relationship. Both are happy with their lives but society subtly demands a change. Exquisite cinematography again comes into focus thanks to another sublime restoration. Loved everything about this. <br><a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/CinemaMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CinemaMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/film" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>film</span></a> <br><a href="https://boxd.it/8S6rYf" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">boxd.it/8S6rYf</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Bateman<p>The Brutalist (Brady Corbet, 2024) The 215-minute runtime looked daunting but I was never bored throughout. The film looks great, especially on 70 mm and there are some great moments and Brody is in fine form. But in the end, it mostly felt distant, although I quite liked the sardonic epilogue the more I think about it. <br><a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/CinemaMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CinemaMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/film" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>film</span></a> <a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <br><a href="https://boxd.it/8PImRd" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">boxd.it/8PImRd</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Mandu 🥟<p>Better Man </p><p>A Robbie Williams biopic/musical/fantasy hybrid told through the eyes of a mo-cap CGI chimpanzee. Despite knowing little about his career beforehand and having a slightly lengthy runtime, the film remains oddly captivating and never boring.</p><p>Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑 </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/CinemaMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CinemaMastodon</span></a></p>
Mandu 🥟<p>Wolf Man</p><p>The narrative unexpectedly leaned toward a slower, more somber pace and concluded on an anticlimactic note. That said, it did feature some intriguing POV sequences. It also reminded me a little of The Fly, though it fell short of matching that classic's impact. 🌕🌕🌖🌑🌑 </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/CinemaMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CinemaMastodon</span></a></p>
Mandu 🥟<p>Den of Thieves 2: Pantera </p><p>This movie isn’t super action-packed, but it has just enough to keep things interesting. More of a slower-paced crime/heist narrative evoking the tone of films like Sicario and Heat. And while technically a sequel, it works just fine on its own. One notable sequence involves the use of an EV sports car, another with a low-tech invisibility shield; two firsts I've seen on film.<br>Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌖🌑 </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/CinemaMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CinemaMastodon</span></a></p>
Bateman<p>螳螂 | Shaolin Mantis (Lau Kar-Leung, 1978) Another Shaw Bros joint. The emperor sends a humble student to spy on a potentially rebellious clan. Of course, the leader's granddaughter falls in love with him, creating all sorts of trouble that martial arts can only solve. Should be a classic as the twist at the end is pretty dark but it takes some time to get going. The mantis training session is hilarious.<br><a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/film" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>film</span></a> <a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/kungfu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>kungfu</span></a> <a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/CinemaMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CinemaMastodon</span></a> <br><a href="https://boxd.it/8D3pv5" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">boxd.it/8D3pv5</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Bateman<p>Mr. K (Tallulah Hazekamp Schwab, 2024) An excellent Crispin Glover stars in this absurdist Euro-production telling of an illusionist who can't leave his hotel. A good-looking film with some obvious influences, both literary and cinematic. Enjoyable for what it is. <a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/CinemaMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CinemaMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/film" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>film</span></a> <a href="https://boxd.it/8CENUX" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">boxd.it/8CENUX</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>

Bateman<p>Летят журавли | The Cranes Are Flying (Mikhail Kalatozov, 1957) Celebrated antiwar film. To a certain degree, war is shown as a devastating force but the motherland still has to be defended and the great propaganda speech that closes the film sounds completely hollow today. The visual splendour is undeniable, but I didn´t like how this descended into a tale of a woman's boundless suffering (even on a symbolic level it's clumsy.)<br><a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/CinemaMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CinemaMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/film" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>film</span></a><br><a href="https://boxd.it/8wgLdF" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">boxd.it/8wgLdF</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>

Bateman<p>Неотправленное письмо/Letter Never Sent (Mikhail Kalatozov, 1959) A visual feast. The black and white cinematography is beautiful especially in the crisp restoration. Also some of the best representations of intensity and euphoria I have ever seen. And that's just the first half, because man, does a Soviet hero need to endure the disinterested wrath of nature.<br><a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/film" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>film</span></a> <a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/CinemaMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CinemaMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://boxd.it/8t19Mv" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">boxd.it/8t19Mv</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
John Harden<p>Last night Sheila and I caught a screening of the new Eno <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/documentary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>documentary</span></a> at Sebastopol's Rialto, in theater one (the big room) and it was packed. Nice to see so many come out for one of my all-time art-world heroes. For me the film could’ve been twice as long, as it only briefly touched on his time producing Bowie, U2, Talking Heads, and no mention at all of his time in the <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Krautrock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Krautrock</span></a> scene. Given the <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/generative" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>generative</span></a> nature of the <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/film" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>film</span></a> I wonder if there was material I didn't get to see. I'm not aware if the software just shuffles scenes or actually includes/omits stuff at random. <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/movies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>movies</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/CinemaMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CinemaMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/cinemastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cinemastodon</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/YabtM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>YabtM</span></a></p>

Bateman<p>Megalopolis (Francis Ford Coppola, 2024) An enjoyable ride, at times thought-provoking, at times silly and clumsy. The same goes for the visuals, which sometimes are breathtaking to be followed by something completely dated. I'm glad I watched it in the theatre but afterwards, I was overcome by a feeling that the era of Big Gesture Cinema is over.<br><a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/CinemaMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CinemaMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://ravenation.club/tags/film" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>film</span></a><br><a href="https://boxd.it/8inbhp" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">boxd.it/8inbhp</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Karen Mardahl<p>Just watched "All the Beauty and the Bloodshed", a fantastic documentary about Nan Goldin, but also about her activism with groups like P.A.I.N to try to make the Sackler family (ex-Purdue Pharma) accountable for the opioid crisis that grew out of Purdue's OxyContin.
