Different Than<p>Just had a weird thought: both my parents committed <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/suicide" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>suicide</span></a>. They died three years ago. They had both been hospitalized for partially related reasons. My father had lung <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/cancer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cancer</span></a> (IDK what stage) and COVID--most of my siblings refuse to acknowledge that <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/COVID" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>COVID</span></a> was one of his causes of death. His breathing got more and more difficult. At some point he ordered his medical team to remove all ventilation assistance. He died 2 or 3 days later. My sisters (who lived about 4,000 km closer) found out, from a helpful nurse who leaked the info, and were with him for his last hours. He did not tell my mother.</p><p>My mother went to a nursing home. A few months later, staff reported that she was refusing to eat and refusing to take medication (she had diabetes and heart disease, among other issues). She died within a couple of weeks.</p><p>I don't know that I've ever phrased it this way, but in a meaningful sense they both committed suicide.</p>
