Camel Case?

Improved Readability:
Capitalizing the first letter of each word makes it easier to distinguish individual words within a hashtag, especially for people with dyslexia or other reading difficulties.

Accessibility:
Screen readers struggle to parse long, lowercase hashtags, but camel case helps them identify word boundaries.

Professional:
Camel case hashtags are considered a social media best practice and can help create a more professional and accessible online presence.

Please DO capitalize the words within a hashtag.

camelCase and PascalCase are two very similar norms that allow words to be joined without hyphenation but distinguished by readers through capitalization of the first letters of words.

The difference is that Pascal Case requires the first letter of the first word to be capitalized but camel Case just insists on the following words. The two terms are often referred to without distinction here though.

Be aware that Mastodon autocomplete will offer up the first version created for a hashtag. So, it’s important to be careful to make sure a hashtag that you type isn’t autocompleted to a version without capitals.

Hey everyone,
If you want to help onboard new people, please check out or follow the hashtags #introduction #FirstPost #NewHere #NeuHier etc...

Boost the posts, say hi, welcome them to the Fediverse, follow them if you share interests, answer questions they might have and give tips and recommendations if you think they'll be appreciated.

You can also remind the new people of Fediverse etiquette in a friendly way when appropriate, but please don't be too pushy about it.
#AltText = caption = media description: describes media for the visually or acustically impared.
#CW = content warning: Hides post behind a trigger warning.
#CamelCase = writing each first letter of a compound hashtag in capitals to help with readability (esp. for screen readers)

Lets make sure the new people feel welcome and want to stay.

@mastodonmigration what a great tip! And welcome, new friends.

A note: you'll get more boosts on images with alt text. Some of us don't boost when alt text is missing - to make life richer for people using screenreaders. It's also fun, to do visual descriptions!

If you don't, you may get nudges like #altText4me #altText4u … and luckily you can edit and add #alttext to images later.

(PS: using #camelCase in your tags is recommended, it also helps screenreader users)

@Susibryant Sure. 🙂

CW: Content warning. Its a feature to hide text behind a warning often used when posting something that could be triggering.

AltText: also known as media caption is text describing an image or other media to people who can't see it clearly or might not understand it or people who can't hear the audio. In Mastodon, if you upload a media file and then find the "edit" button, you can add AltText.

CamelCase: Is a way to make hashtags more readable (for people who rely on screenreaders or simply have trouble decifering long uncommon compound words). Simply write the first letter of each word in capitals. So e.g. #CamelCase #AltText or #ContentWarning.

In response to the #hashtag casing issue, I've written a script for #MastoAdmin's to try to convert as many of them as possible to #PascalCase automatically:

Feedbacks & contributors welcome! (I'm still considering whether I should incorporate recent tagged posts to counter the computerized results.)
