Tom<p>The nuc hives seem to be doing good. The green one has more pollen coming in, the white one is taking more syrup.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/beekeeping" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>beekeeping</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/apiary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>apiary</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/NucHive" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NucHive</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/bees" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bees</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/honeybee" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>honeybee</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/NucleusHive" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NucleusHive</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/BeeSplit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BeeSplit</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/beehive" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>beehive</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/May5" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>May5</span></a></p>
Tom<p>The White nuc that only had 2 frames of bees, brood, and food is consuming food faster than the Green nuc so I upped the size of the feeder. I've been feeding 1:1 syrup of sugar and switched to goldenrod honey today. Small jar had 250g sugar/honey. Big jar is 660g honey.</p><p>When I first set the feeder this morning I thought it was leaking because it was bubbling so fast. Checked and it had a ball of bees on it.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/beekeeping" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>beekeeping</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/apiary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>apiary</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/NucHive" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NucHive</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/BeeHive" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BeeHive</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/BeeFeeder" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BeeFeeder</span></a></p>
AI6YR Ben<p>The sun came out for about 30 minutes today, and a swarm of bees showed up in the backyard (!). Again. (at least... we don't need to hunt for bee swarms to replace lost hives 🤷 )</p><p><a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/beekeeping" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>beekeeping</span></a> <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/beemudatriangle" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>beemudatriangle</span></a></p>

Tommy Poulsen<p>Great activity in the hives today! Plenty to forage in the neighborhood - dandelion, apple, pear, chestnut and rapeseed among much else blooming at the moment. Will probably need to add another super to both hives in a week or so.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/beekeeping" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>beekeeping</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/beehives" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>beehives</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/biavl" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>biavl</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/denmark" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>denmark</span></a></p>

tickfoot<p>Fellow <a href="https://regenerate.social/tags/beekeepers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>beekeepers</span></a> I am encountering a situation I haven't run into before (third year keeper) and am interested in hearing thoughts from seasoned keepers...</p><p>In 2 of our hives and one young but strong split I have no brood, very little pollen stores, and mostly all nectar or capped honey. ~ 2 weeks ago saw 1+ day old and capped brood.</p><p>We got a late frost about 2 weeks ago which knocked off a lot of blooms on surrounding flora. Daytime weather has generally been hotter and drier than usual the last couple of weeks. Could this brood break be a natural response to potentially low pollen availability? </p><p>I am not convinced yet that we're queenless in 3 hives. My strongest hive is far too aggressive right now (chasing us for 1/4 mile...) to go frame by frame - so it may be without a queen. There's a lot more detail I could go into but I'll end it here for now.</p><p>TIA</p><p><a href="https://regenerate.social/tags/beekeeper" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>beekeeper</span></a> <a href="https://regenerate.social/tags/beekeeping" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>beekeeping</span></a> <a href="https://regenerate.social/tags/honeybee" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>honeybee</span></a></p>
The Apiarist<p>[New post] In the apiary, every day is Judgement Day. Good judgement involves ample information, some insightful interpretation, and understanding. Bad judgement involves a lack of information, guesswork, wishful thinking and sentimentality.<br><a href="https://theapiarist.org/judgement-day/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">theapiarist.org/judgement-day/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> <br><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/beekeeping" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>beekeeping</span></a></p>
Tom<p>As a beekeeper you should never say "things seem back to normal" when thinking about how it's been a week since you checked the hives and cleared swarm cells.</p><p>That damn West hive again. I heard the dreaded buzzing, saw them gathering up in the top of the cypress again..., and sort of all over the place. Finally spotted a cluster in the cypress. Was inside for 5 minutes, came back out, buzzing again! Cluster gone, bees going back in the hive. Fire drill complete.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/beekeeping" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>beekeeping</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/apiary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>apiary</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/bees" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bees</span></a></p>

Jo<p>In the first apiary this hives pallet stand had almost rotted away, pallets are useless for stands. Searching in the bank for something to use as a stop gap I found, of all things, 2 short lengths of railway track. They'd been used to stop a pile of corregated sheets from blowing away back when Adam was a lad I'd say. The sheets are not blowing anywhere now having become one with the landscape so these make a very sturdy and durable hive stand, if a touch short. <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/beekeeping" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>beekeeping</span></a></p>
Jo<p>Bearding. The bees do this when it is too hot in the hive and they have no work to do, so they hang about outside. They are not doing anything, such as fanning to cool the hive, they are just keeping out the way and letting work go on inside. <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/beekeeping" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>beekeeping</span></a></p>
Jo<p>Plenty of the big male bees, the drones, in the hives now. Named for the distinctive sound of their wings. <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/beekeeping" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>beekeeping</span></a></p>
Jo<p>Had to leave half the second apiary. In full sun, on a 1 in4ish slope and not able to get the truck very close, by hive 3, having carried about 13 supers up the slope, I was collapsing from the heat and by hive 6, lifting heavy supers on his own, Stuart was too. Home now trying to cool down but still have a truck to unload and a split in a poly nuc to rehome. <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/beekeeping" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>beekeeping</span></a></p>
Tom<p>The bees at the green nuc yesterday. This is the one that has 3 frames of bees, brood, food, and queen cells. I've seen foragers coming in with pollen so I guess some didn't decide to go back to their old hive. I might have observed a little bit of robbing going on too but it's hard to tell if the bees fly off into the yonder or turn directly into one of the hives next to it.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/beekeeping" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>beekeeping</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/NucHive" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NucHive</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/BeeSplit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BeeSplit</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/apiary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>apiary</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/bees" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bees</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/April28" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>April28</span></a></p>

Jo<p>This bee has been working dandelions. She is smothered in yellow pollen and yet the pollen in her basket is orange. This is because they mix the pollen in their basket with a bit of nectar and it changes the colour. <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/beekeeping" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>beekeeping</span></a></p>
