lol this fucking game man. I love hating it. I've got a 2-dan (WAY WAY better than me) telling me how I could have beaten a 3-kyu (WAY better than me) https://online-go.com/review/1452700
That decades of joy + suffering flow from a tiny list of rules you can learn in 2 minutes... extraordinary. #go #igo #baduk #weiqi
I have learned that when it comes to #Tsumego and learning Go: replay puzzles. If it gets hard, and you cant progress and are losing the fun: work your way back. Go back to easier stuff. Get the fun back, repractice the fundamentals. Even 25k stuff, if just to get back in the groove.
It doesnt mean you are weak. It might just mean you need a break from the hard-for-now stuff. And need a refresher on the more basic stuff to break the hard-for-now.
The pro game collection in SmartGo One has been updated with over 2,000 new games, for a total of over 130,000 games. The names dictionary lists over 4,700 entries.
The increased number of games makes this old blog post on searching for pro games even more relevant:

"There are so many shapes deriving from the basic comb shape that covering it fully is beyond the scope of a proverbs book."

I LOOOVE that Tsumego Hero has a filter for difficulty now. Now I can practice at one rank of problems at a time. Plus I feel like I am getting what the puzzles are trying to tell me better.
SmartGo One 2.3.5 is mostly a bug fix update, but also adds a setting for showing the SGF circle property as a circle instead of a dot, a frequently requested change. It now defaults to circle on stones, dot on empty points (Settings > Board Display > Circle as Dot). You can also mark the most recent move with a circle, as you may be used to from some other apps (Settings > Board Display > Move Numbering, or just tap on the board with two fingers for quick view adjustments).
The most recent episode of the usually excellent “All Things Go” podcast features an interview with me. Still pretty good.

“Mastering Basic Corner Shapes” by Young Sun Yoon is now available in the app as well as at gobooks.com. Read more about it in the recent newsletter (and subscribe if you're not subscribed yet):
TIL it is useful to lump responses to corner approaches into five general categories:
- Pincer
- Kick
- Lean
- Extension
- Tenuki
And simply thinking through the feasibility of the categories (rather than any specific move) is a handy way to reduce the number of move candidates.

When you go to gobooks.com, you’ll also notice a new book: “Mastering Basic Corner Shapes” by Young Sun Yoon. Available on the web, still waiting for Apple’s approval on the App Store. More about that when it’s approved.
Kiseido is putting two books on sale for half price: “Modern Master Games: The Dawn of Tournament Go” and “Encyclopedia of Go Principles”. Grab one or both of these excellent books before February 28th!
