My former research group is launching an online seminar series about global knowledge production and academic (semi)peripheries. This is a much needed topic and highly interesting to me personally. One side effect of a previous seminar was my grant application which ended with me going for several weeks to Chile, so you never know. ;-)

The first seminar in this series will take place on Thursday, May 8, at 14:00 CET. Jakub Krzeski will give a talk “Excellence and ‘Shock Therapy’ on the Academic Periphery: The Polish Committee for Scientific Research”.

You can register for this and future talks online, it's very simple! Here's the link: sc.amu.edu.pl/science-and-semi

The group in question is SCRG, Scholarly Communication Research Group, at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland.

Spanish language news. Europe launches campaign to attract scientists after Donald Trump freezes [NSF] funds.

This is via AP, so I am sure others can find in English this just happens to be where I saw it first.

The US administration is coming for #ScientificJournals now.. I don't have access to the full article, and it's in French, but several journals have received a "questioning" mail from the Columbia district state attorney, and two journals have suspended submissions (Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP) and the Journal of Health and Pollution (JHP)) citing federal funding cuts.

Next step: destroying published papers? We should all probably archive as much of the scientific literature as we can before it's too late..

I want to post this:

👋 🌊 Hello friends!

I am currently working on a paper for eScience about predicting population size and estimated mortality events for bird populations in the subantarctic islands of Aotearoa New Zealand, when H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza hits.

I prefer working closely with others when I get to the home stretch. So, if you're into eBird data and population metrics and you'd like to join me in writing this paper, let me know.

Checking my historical #unemployment. Eight weeks strewn across 2019. A few days in 2018. Prior to that, some time in 2002. We'll see how long it takes now.

The trouble with a research-heavy career in #archaeology is that as the years go by you just become more and more over-qualified, or misqualified, for the few jobs on the labour market. The ideal experience profile for a job is years sectioning prehistoric postholes for highway projects.

Update. "#Trump says he’s yanking #Harvard’s tax-exempt status."

PS: We could say that Trump has moved from threat to action. Or we could say that he's started another two-step dance to energize the MAGA base, first with a futile gesture ("look at my strong action!") and second with the inevitable loss in court ("look at those radical judges!").

I build academic websites cheaply! If you need one, get in touch (here, or at hugo.heagren@kcl.ac.uk, or on the form below).

Many people (grad students) are looking towards the academic job market in autumn. Received wisdom says you should have a website saying who you are and what you've done.

Not everyone can build websites, but I can. There are more details on my own site: hugoheagren.com/web-design.htm

Polish universities have earmarked funding with which they can only hire foreigners. The department hired me because their overall funding is dependent on publications in top journals.

I was fairly useless as a teacher in central Poland, for three reasons:

1. I know nothing about the region's #archaeology and Scandinavian archaeology does not interest them.

2. I don't speak Polish.

3. Many young Poles don't understand English very well.

FYI, if you happen to be a scientist in a large English-speaking country with uncertain future research financing; my employer, Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is looking for grad students, postdocs and PIs.

It's a research institute, so no undergraduates, and the working language is English - no japanese required. And its located on a (semi) tropical island in the Pacific.
