NIWA's long-term forecast doesn't bode well for the ski industry. We're entering an "Enso-neutral state" where neither El Nino nor La Nina conditions are present in the Pacific Ocean.

For the Southern Alps this brings less precipitation and warmer than average temperatures. For skifields this means less snow which freezes overnight and is icy in the mornings. Like an early spring.

For non-skiers this probably means a warmer winter.

Rock Creek Canyon survey today revealed that I could not ski much past our 2200m campground start. Had to turn back, then put on hiking boots. We hiked 5K in, then soft slush on the road got too deep, at 2350m. Would have been good skiing there, but more bare spots would be further up. Warm 18C when we finished, but cool down next several days, more snow 👍. Glad my left leg held up, but did not want post-holing, would have set back recovery. #climate #hiking #skiing #dogs #montana #gye
