MDMRN<p>The second panel is so bright. </p><p>It's a moment with Kaori and Kosei where they are in a field of fireflies.</p><p>She's asking what's driving him. He says it's her. She's what's motivating him to keep on going, keep on playing the piano.</p><p>It's a sweet and sad moment. His motivation when he was little was his Mom. Now it's Kaori. </p><p>This moment, though. I remember it from the anime and in the manga, it's just as well done. MDMRN<p>Re-Read - Your Lie in April, Volume 5</p><p>Volume 5 had some moments. I narrowed it down to two I wanted to discuss.</p><p>This is the first.</p><p>Kosei is on the piano and he's hearing his mother's voice in his head saying that "Solitude is [his] punishment." </p><p>It's chilling and the shading in this scene making it appear as though the shadows are enclosing him. MDMRN<p>The second is one of a few panels where Kosei is seeing his mother.</p><p>These moments where his mother shows up in his mind to torment him. This is his curse, she says to him. Play perfectly, she says to him.</p><p>He is not and may never be over his mother's death. MDMRN<p>Re-Read - Your Lie in April, Volume 4</p><p>I read Volumes 4 and 5 this past weekend and, once again, I wanted to talk about some striking panels. </p><p>This one is of Emi giving her performance. It is toward the end of her performance and the characters are seeing color in her music. But, also her emotions played out for all to see. Loneliness. MDMRN<p>New Read - Delicious in Dungeon, Volume 1</p><p>Okay, volume 1 sold me. It sold me hard.</p><p>Basic premise is that a band of fantasy adventurers get through a dungeon, only to be so hungry that they cannot fight against a red dragon and one of their compatriots is swallowed whole by the dragon.</p><p>So, after regrouping, they decide to go back. But, like they need to eat along the way. </p><p>Enter Senshi. Senshi helps teach them how to cook monster they find in the dungeons and it's so much fun.</p><p>Glad I picked this up. MDMRN<p>This is another panel that is just striking to me.</p><p>The parallels between how Kaori pushes Kosei into the piano and his mother are many. However, unlike his mother, she recognizes something - what she is doing is too much.</p><p>After a while she has this revelation that she's pushed him so far without considering his feelings. This is that moment.</p><p>It's powerful because his mother never once self-reflects. MDMRN<p>New Manga Read - Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Volume 10</p><p>Almost the entire volume is comprised of the memories of Macht of the Golden Land. </p><p>This flashback is SO well done. Incredible to fully understand Macht's backstory and how it overlapped with the region, with Denken, and with Frieren. </p><p>Flashing back to the present in the story and Macht with a friend from the past become a problem.</p><p>But that ending.</p><p>Such a well crafted volume, as always. MDMRN<p>The second moment comes VERY soon thereafter. It's when Kaori stops, turns, and says "Again" to Kosei.</p><p>She is providing something else to him as he processes his mother's death. She's providing a new focal point. MDMRN<p>Re-Read - Your Lie in April, Volume 2</p><p>Volume 2 of my annual re-read of Your Lie in April is down.</p><p>Instead of just commenting on the whole volume as I normally do, I wanted to focus in on moments that stood out.</p><p>First, Kosei seeing the ghost of his mother. It's a lot and while it's all in his head, it is presented so well and incredibly eerie. He has never fully processed the death of his mother and how that ties back to him and the piano. MDMRN<p>Also, Naoshi Arakawa's art is incredible. It's so beautiful and expressive. It fully engages you in the tone of the series.</p><p>This is a series that touches on child abuse, death, family loss, terminal illness, and other heavy topics. It does so with music across every page.</p><p>I know it's imperfect and I know all of the criticisms of the series. </p><p>I love it anyway.</p><p>I will try to continue to share my readthrough here on Mastodon as I go along. It's an amazing sports story about high school volleyball players with an incredible time skip ending arc.</p><p>However, I'm a Dad with four kids and I can't afford the cost or space to buy all 45 volumes.</p><p>About 2 years ago, after seeing a friend get it, I picked up a copy of the Japanese language art book for Haikyuu. MDMRN<p>New Read - Animal Crossing: New Horizons Deserted Island Diary</p><p>Another volume of Animal Crossing's on-going silly manga set in the New Horizons game. It's very silly, very fun, very full of in-jokes for folks who play the game.</p><p>Each chapter is a silly self-contained story. My favorite is the one where everyone decides to honor Tom Nook with gifts for all the good he's done for the island. They terraform to make an entire section of the island look like him. MDMRN<p>Wanted: Eiichiro Oda Before One Piece (Pixtagram Repost)</p><p>Wanted is a collection of single stories written by Eiichiro Oda before he developed One Piece. These include Wanted!, Kami kara Mirai no Present, Ikki Yakou, Monsters, and Romance Dawn. Monsters is the one I had already read before, including the anime adaptation from Netflix. The others, I had no familiarity with.</p><p>Overall, it was fun. Not a lot happens. it's a slice of life series about a geeky elf who is the local deity for a small temple and her miko (Shrine Maiden). It's day to day life of the elf not wanting to go out much, playing games, talking about her past as she has lived a long, long life, and day to day stuff of our miko as she is in school.</p><p>It's a mix of Japanese history lesson with about their culture in the past with slice of life.</p><p>It's very chill. And I appreciate that.</p><p>Anyway, enjoyed it.
