It’s #InverteFest again! So here is my pollinator propaganda for Manufactured Ecosystems. Thinking about the future of pollination and seeking solutions from technological and nature-based knowledge. This is essentially my conclusion: we can aid our beleaguered pollinators with technology but their continued success is vital. We need to foster the insects to keep ecosystems functioning. 🧵

I prefer to have a species identification on the photographs I post, but this one is more of a PSA: take lots of pics and don't throw any away, because you never what angle an expert on iNaturalist or BugGuide might need to make the call. I *think* this might be Ceratina calcarata (a carpenter bee), but it turns out one of the diagnostic characters is a triangular swelling on the hind femur, something (of course) I didn't know at the time. A frame that I'd normally trash (right pic) shows it. #inaturalist #bugguide #bees #dandelion #taxonomy #insects #macrophotography

Late?
Late?
I’ll give you late…
Oh wait I just did.
My bad.
Speaking of which…
Bad enough dying but often not considered - no control over what stand-for-nothing pseudo-fascist prick will show up at your funeral.

The ability of #bees and other insects to forage diminishes as #pollution in the air increases.
Air pollutants such as #ozone break down scent molecules emitted by #plants which #insects use to locate vital forage sources.☹️

The Donkey Tail growing down by the marina parking lot is flowering and is covered with pollinators!! I think these are all new species for me: some kind of Halictus furrowing bee (maybe Halictus rubicundus), another that looks like it’s in Lasioglossum, and then possibly a Purple Miner Bee (Andrena prunorum)

There were definitely more out there but I’ll have to go back with the big camera to get enough detail. Just had my phone on me!

Common buckeye butterflies are known for their distinctive eye like markings on their wings. This butterfly is a frequent sight across many regions of the United States and Mexico.
