Weary Wulf<p>[P] Also, one thing that really strikes me, going back through old games, was how commonplace it was to welcome otherness. "I don't want to harm the—oh. You're not asking me to? I can help them, even befriend them? Okay!" A weirdo wasn't automatically evil, they could be heroes too. A dragon wasn't a war machine one had to butcher, sometimes one just needed a certain item or bit of wisdom from them, and we could help them as quid pro quo.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/psychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/humans" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>humans</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videogames</span></a></p><p>-1</p>

Weary Wulf<p>[P] Heh. Of course oldschool pointy-click fans get it... Of course they do.</p><p><a href="https://forums.thimbleweedpark.com/t/remastering-old-games-do-more-resolution-and-colors-make-the-graphics-better/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">forums.thimbleweedpark.com/t/r</span><span class="invisible">emastering-old-games-do-more-resolution-and-colors-make-the-graphics-better/</span></a></p><p>A remaster changes the intent. There is intent in art, it has a voice. It speaks with intention. I don't know how to articulate this better, but what a remaster does is kill the identity, put a new person in place, and expects everyone to not notice despite the new person being so different.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/psychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/humans" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>humans</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videogames</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gamedev" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gamedev</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>art</span></a></p>
Weary Wulf<p>[P] I mean, the average neurotypical believes that the AI-reimagined photoslop they take on their "smart" phones—that smeary, smudgy, blownout mess that loses upward of thirty per cent of its detail—is better than what can be taken with a "dumb" camera equipped with an excellent lens. I swear this is true: neurotypical hiverarchy is devoid of aesthetic appreciation. And when that truth settles in, the state of entertainment makes sense.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/psychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/humans" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>humans</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videogames</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>art</span></a></p><p>-6</p>
Weary Wulf<p>[P] The end result is that I end up feeling terrible for the original artists, whose passion and vision was dumped in a rubbish bin then lit alight to burn in an effigy to capitalism as practised by hypenotised zombies. Effort went into that! This is why neurotypicals can't tell AI art from the rral thing, but for creative neurodiverse types it's night and day. It's a notion I see going around, but looking at modern filma and games? I agree. Art is dead.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/psychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/humans" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>humans</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videogames</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>art</span></a></p><p>-5</p>
Weary Wulf<p>[P] Just... It's amazing that anyone thinks any remaster truly looks better by destroying an aesthetic. I mean, look at Suikoden...<br>[S] *cries in artist.*<br>[P] The original artists made choices about what aesthetic a place would have. A dimly lit mausoleum? Nah!! Let's blow it out with nuclear bloom, and plaster identical stained glass windows along the walls! And why do interior doors have windows??<br>[Tr] But the resomolutions, chief! The resomolutions!!</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/psychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/humans" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>humans</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videogames</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>art</span></a></p><p>-4</p>
Weary Wulf<p>[P] I've never in my life met a neurotypical hiverarchian who understood the concept of an intended aesthetic. It's why fidelity dominates the industry, and suit-encrusted execs are looking at AI. They've figured out what I had: You can't sell art to neurotypicals, they don't have the prerequisite hardware modules to parse it. You can only sell aesthetic intent to endies, and we aren't the majority. Hence why AAA devs respect art. It doesn't sell.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/psychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/humans" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>humans</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videogames</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>art</span></a></p><p>-3</p>
Weary Wulf<p>[P] The placement of a texture, or a detail on it; the shape of objects, and where they're placed; what any asset is meant to convey (I don't think Alan Wake was supposed to look perma-pissed off). It all matters. For neurotypical hiverarchy, though? Only hierarchy matters. I'm positively shocked. Bigger numbers! Infinite growth! More resomolutions! More polymogons! And the intended aesthetic? Ha! It doesn't even register. Art is irrelevant to them.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/psychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/humans" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>humans</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videogames</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>art</span></a></p><p>-2</p>
Weary Wulf<p>[P] If you want evidence that the artist is a rare beast? Research remasters. 9/10 the original will remain aesthetically superior as it wasn't thrown together by interns using stock assets, AI upscalijg, and smearing on post-processing until nothing of the original remains. Cinematic framing and lighting, unique silhouettes, set dressing? It all goes out the window. Everything is important to an aesthetic, every little detail matters.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/psychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/humans" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>humans</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videogames</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>art</span></a></p><p>-1</p>

Flipboard Culture Desk<p>"Every day, as a deaf person, you're reminded of your deafness," says William Mager, writer of new BBC thriller “Reunion.” The frustrations, or “deaf rage,” born of living in a hearing-centered world can add up over time. This rage is what inspired Mager to work on “Reunion,” a four-part series from the producers of “Adolescence,” that tells the story of a deaf man on a journey of revenge after spending a decade in prison. <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://flipboard.com/@BBCNews" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>BBCNews</span></a></span> has more:</p><p><a href="https://flip.it/qd0XmT" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">flip.it/qd0XmT</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Culture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Culture</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/TV" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TV</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Humans" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Humans</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Deafness" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Deafness</span></a></p>
