Author-ized L.J.<p>My second read-through of The Fifth Season is even better than the first because I'm not rushing through impatient to find out what happens next, plus I'm actually catching some major foreshadowing this second time around. I'm still surprised by some things, though, because I either forgot them since my first read or was in too much of a hurry the first time. </p><p>I have many Thoughts and Feelings about a lot of big heavy stuff, but how about if I get light-hearted for now and explain my bonkers yet amusing theory that the character Lerna has the instincts of a Breeder which explains his feelings for [mild, likely obvious spoiler redacted]? <a href="https://writeout.ink/tags/amReading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>amReading</span></a> <a href="https://writeout.ink/tags/BrokenEarth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BrokenEarth</span></a></p>
Author-ized L.J.<p>It occurred to me on re-read when I got to the part where Schaffa was aiming the knife at Damaya the whole time while breaking her hand, that this has strong parallels to the Gom Jabbar scene early in the start of Dune--except Jemisin cuts right through the bullcrap of "It's because you're so special and powerful that we want to make sure you're not a threat" and drills right down to the abuse and control. Herbert also kind of gets there when Paul confronts the Reverend Mother years later, but in The Fifth Season it's so clearly set up and sharply focused that the effect is visceral and impossible to miss. <a href="https://writeout.ink/tags/amReading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>amReading</span></a> <a href="https://writeout.ink/tags/BrokenEarth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BrokenEarth</span></a></p>

Pat<p>First sentences of the three books in The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin: </p><p>1 - The Broken Earth - "Let's start with the end of the world, why don't we? Get it order with and move on to more important things."</p><p>2 - The Obelisk Gate - "Hmm. No. I'm telling this wrong."</p><p>3 - The Stone Sky - "Time grows short, my love. Let's end with the beginning of the world, shall we? Yes. We shall."</p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span> <a href="https://pnw.zone/tags/TheBrokenEarth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TheBrokenEarth</span></a> <a href="https://pnw.zone/tags/BrokenEarth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BrokenEarth</span></a></p>
Noah Cook<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://homo.promo/@reginasbread" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>reginasbread</span></a></span> You might like N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth Trilogy (The Fifth Season, The Obelisk Gate, The Stone Sky). I should warn that there are also younger heroes, but if you want a story about a middle-aged woman who has seen some shit and is tired, so very very tired, of trying to save the world for people who hate her...</p><p>(also, Jemisin's prose is on par with Dylan Thomas, would be the other reason to read it)</p><p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074CBFX6M" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">amazon.com/dp/B074CBFX6M</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://med-mastodon.com/tags/NKJemisin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NKJemisin</span></a><br><a href="https://med-mastodon.com/tags/BrokenEarth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BrokenEarth</span></a></p>
