A category that is rapidly disappearing is the coded LGBTQ character; i.e. one who is hinted, alleged, and implied as queer but is never explicitly revealed as such during the series' run.

Some characters have later been revealed as queer either by the creator, as part of a reboot, or simply through changing definitions. (1/3)

Waylan Smithers from the Simpsons is one of the best known with his infatuation with his boss, Mr. Burns, the source of recurring jokes in earlier seasons. Smithers also exemplifies the progress made since the show's debut 30 years ago as in later seasons, he is out and living with a partner. (2/3)
